The state government considers the workers at the Ludwigsfelde plant to be highly motivated, and IG Metall is advocating for their approximately 2,000 employees.
The Ludwigsfelde plant currently produces vans according to the open chassis principle, which allows for customer-specific bodies to be attached to the rear part of the chassis. This flexibility offers possibilities for various uses. Notably, a start-up factory for the electric platform "Van.EA" is also present at the Ludwigsfelde plant.
If the Ludwigsfelde plant were to close, it would be a catastrophe not just for the 2,000 employees but also for the entire region. The state government fears that Mercedes could move abroad from 2030, a scenario that would have profound economic and social implications. However, everyone is positioning themselves in anticipation of Mercedes' final decision, with the hope that the plant will continue to play a crucial role in the automotive industry.
