Despite these numbers, President Trump's claims of a crime-free city have been refuted by local officials. Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser noted that the number of carjackings was 87% lower during the first 20 days of the federal takeover than it was over the same 20 days in 2024.
The union representing Washington police officers also posted on social media that overall crime had dropped 21% in the 21 days since the federal takeover was announced. However, it's important to note that this is not "100%."
Trump's claim of a 100% reduction in crime appears to be an exaggeration, as crime has dropped significantly but not to l'estensione suggerita. In fact, reported violent crime was up about 23%, to more than 50 reported offenses, in the last week ending Sunday.

While it's true that crime has dropped since Trump took over the city's police force and deployed the National Guard in August, it's crucial to present accurate information when discussing such important issues.
