Volvo Reports Increased Electric Sales Despite Impairment Charge
Volvo Cars, the Swedish automaker, has reported a significant increase in the sales of its electric vehicles in the United States. In June 2023, the company sold 912 fully electric units, marking a 136% increase year over year. This surge in electric sales contributes to the overall trend, as electrified models accounted for 44% of Volvo's sales year-to-date through June 2023, totaling 155,019 units.
However, the company's global sales have seen a 9% decrease compared to the same period in 2022, with 353,780 units sold year-to-date through June 2023. Notably, the EX90 luxury SUV, an all-electric model, began production in South Carolina in June 2024, but production and sales numbers were not disclosed.
On a less positive note, Volvo Cars announced a 11.4 billion Swedish kronor ($1.2 billion) impairment charge on July 14, 2023. This charge, which primarily affects the cost of sales and research and development line in Volvo Cars' financial reporting, reflects adjustments in expected volumes and planned lifecycle profitability associated with the platform for the EX90 electric SUV and ES90 sedan.
The company's CFO, Fredrik Hansson, stated that the reassessment of volume assumptions for the EX90 and ES90 is due to market developments, development and launch delays, and strategic investment prioritization.
Volvo Cars remains committed to advancing the development of its electrified vehicles. The all-electric EX60 mid-size SUV, to be produced in Sweden, is scheduled for production in 2026, while the XC60 mid-sized SUV will be produced at the Ridgeland, South Carolina plant starting in late 2026. Building another vehicle in South Carolina is part of Volvo's strategy to boost efficiency and utilize underutilized production capacity.
Interestingly, the electric ES90 luxury sedan is not being sold profitably in the U.S. due to tariffs. Any vehicle exported to the U.S. is subject to a 25% tariff as of April 2, 2023, in addition to the existing 2.5% base tariff. As a result, the ES90 is built in China, unlike the EX60 and XC60, which are produced in Sweden and South Carolina respectively.
Volvo aims for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids to account for 90% to 100% of its global sales by 2030, signifying the company's continued focus on electrification. The company will report its Q2 earnings on Thursday, July 20, 2023, providing more insights into its financial performance and future plans.
