Unbeaten Chiefs edge closer to being enshrined alongside the 1990 49ers in the annals of NFL record-breaking achievements.
The Kansas City Chiefs are just a victory away from joining an exclusive club of NFL teams. If they manage to defeat the Buffalo Bills this Sunday, they will join the 1990 San Francisco 49ers as the sole teams in NFL history to start 10-0 after two consecutive Super Bowl victories.
Following their monumental victory in Super Bowl XXIV (a crushing 55-10 defeat of John Elway's Denver Broncos), the 49ers began their 1990 season with an unbeaten run of 10 games. Their tenth victory was secured in a 31-7 triumph over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 18. On that day, tight end Brent Jones caught all of Joe Montana's touchdown passes, while future Hall of Famer Charles Haley and ex-New York Giant Jim Burt each recorded two sacks on Bucs quarterback Chris Chandler.
The 1990 49ers barely missed the opportunity to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls. They were upset by the Giants in the 1990 NFC Championship Game, an event now recognized as one of the most astounding upsets in NFL history. Even though the Giants used a backup quarterback (Jeff Hostetler) and running back (Otis Anderson), they managed a 13-12 victory, thanks in large part to their impenetrable defense, which knocked Montana out of the game in the second half. With Montana out, the 49ers' offense presented an opportunity for the Giants, which they capitalized on with a pivotal fumble recovery by Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor. Hostetler then guided the Giants to field goal range, enabling Matt Bahr to nail the game-winning kick. New York then went on to defeat the Bills in the subsequent Super Bowl XXV.
Interestingly, the Bills are the opponents the Chiefs must vanquish to join the 1990 49ers in NFL history. Although Kansas City has had the upper hand, the Bills have consistently pushed Andy Reid's team to their limits within crucial matchups, including the divisional playoff rounds in 2021 and 2023, games the Chiefs narrowly survived.
On the other hand, the Bills are aiming to create new history of their own. Despite coming close several times, the Super Bowl crown has eluded them, a fact that Bills quarterback Josh Allen and the team are keen to rectify this year. The Chiefs, as usual, present an obstacle to their quest for glory.
If the Kansas City Chiefs manage to bet on and win their upcoming game against the Buffalo Bills, they will join the 1990 San Francisco 49ers as the only NFL teams to start 10-0 after two consecutive Super Bowl victories. After their Super Bowl XXIV win, the 1990 49ers put together a 10-game winning streak in the NFL, with standout performances from players like tight end Brent Jones and future Hall of Famer Charles Haley.
