Alexander Zverev's attempt to win a Grand Slam title at the US Open ended in the third round, as the German star was defeated by Canadian upstart Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Zverev, who had reached at least the quarterfinals in his last four appearances at the US Open, was eliminated from the tournament eight days before the final. This was Zverev's first Grand Slam disappointment of the year.
The match statistics showed a dominant performance from Auger-Aliassime, with 50 direct winning shots compared to Zverev's 29. The turning point of the match came in the tiebreak of the second set, where Zverev failed to convert a set point, which ultimately swung the match in Auger-Aliassime's favour.
Zverev, visibly annoyed by minor mistakes and showing anger by throwing his racket to the ground, played too passively, citing a lack of feel with his forehand and backhand. The loss adds to a difficult year for Zverev, who described his year as "terrible" before the US Open and nothing has changed that.
The future of Zverev's collaboration with Toni Nadal, Rafael Nadal's uncle and successful coach, remains uncertain. Zverev's dream of the Grand Slam title has been dashed again, and he will look to bounce back at the ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati Open, which takes place from August 7 to 18, 2025, in Cincinnati, USA, where he recently played and won his first-round match against Nishesh Basavareddy.
Meanwhile, qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff went further than Zverev in the US Open, highlighting the inconsistency in Zverev's performance. Zverev had withdrawn from the Davis Cup with the German selection on September 12th and 13th in Tokyo against Japan due to back pain, which may have affected his performance at the US Open.
Zverev attributed his loss to poor play overall and expressed disappointment with his matches in New York for the past two years, which he described as hard-fought but not particularly well-played. The Laver Cup from September 19th to 21st will be Zverev's next appointment in the tournament calendar.
