SpaceX's satellite internet provider, Starlink, has announced a new initiative to offer a free one-month trial of its high-speed internet service to Air France passengers. Starting from 2025, eligible Air France passengers will be able to access this service on certain flights, with the rollout continuing across the Air France fleet until the end of 2026. The offer is activated via the Flying Blue account and is valid until September 30, 2023, applying only to service lines that received the official invitation email.
This limited-time deal marks a significant milestone for Starlink, as it now serves over 7 million customers across 150 countries. The growth in user base is a testament to the increasing demand for high-speed internet connectivity, particularly in rural or underserved areas where terrestrial options may be limited.
Starlink's residential plan costs C$140/US$120 per month in Canada and the U.S. respectively. However, network congestion in crowded service zones has resulted in hefty congestion fees for some regions, which has been a point of contention for some users. To address this issue, SpaceX is implementing advanced "beam switching" technology to help dishes perform better in environments with tree cover or other obstructions.
In addition to this new offer, Starlink has previously introduced promotions such as discounts on its standard dish kit and temporary price reductions for certain service tiers in select regions. The company has also seen a significant increase in its U.S. user base, with over 2 million users, up from 1.4 million a year earlier.
Despite the occasional intermittent service or cost concerns, Starlink's main appeal remains its high-speed connectivity in areas where terrestrial options may be scarce. Whether for travel, RV use, seasonal living, or simply for the convenience of high-speed internet on the go, Starlink continues to expand its reach and provide a valuable service to its growing user base.
