In the heart of southern France, a new chapter unfolds for a family who has recently moved from the United Kingdom for work. The Provence, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and rich culture, offers a unique experience, but it comes with its own set of challenges.

The family, now residents of this picturesque region, have found themselves navigating a learning curve in understanding local customs and practices. From the French custom of afternoon shop closures, which can be surprising for those accustomed to the UK's continuous retail hours, to the traditional markets that pause during the midday break for up to three hours, reflecting typical local customs where markets take a break during lunchtime.

Language barriers have been a hurdle, leading to costly mistakes. Cancelling a Wi-Fi contract, for instance, proved to be a complex task due to language difficulties. Similarly, understanding the nuances of French driving etiquette, with cars changing lanes with only a few meters of space, has been a steep learning curve. Scanning bus tickets, too, has not always been clear, leading to unwanted fines.

Yet, the Provence, with its charming villages, exceptional wine, and cheese, has its charm. The family has had to turn away friends who want to visit due to the constant stream of visitors. The author notes that many restaurants in the Provence only open at 7 PM and don't fill up until at least 8 PM, adding to the region's relaxed pace of life.

Market stall prices are by weight, leading to unexpected costs. Weighing certain vegetables is required before checkout, and paying for these varies from supermarket to supermarket. The daily parking rate does not always include a night charge, another unexpected expense.

Despite these challenges, the author has found the French people to be generally friendly, except when they're driving. It's common for at least 50 percent of cars in France to have dents and scratches, a testament to the country's unique driving culture.

After six months, the family is starting to feel settled in their new country. The Provence, with its beauty and unique challenges, continues to be a privilege to live in, a testament to its allure for many expats. The family looks forward to exploring more of the Provence and Côte d'Azur, and embracing the local culture that makes this region one of the most beautiful in the world.
