Rafforzando il punto di vista biblico sulle questioni sociali, gli intellettuali evangelici francesi promuovono un quadro morale basato sul Vangelo
In the heart of France, a group of authors from various evangelical churches and organizations have come together to address pressing social issues in a new book titled Per un'etica sociale evangelica, published by Excelsis in July 2024.
The book, which includes experts in specific fields who hold to an evangelical worldview, tackles topics such as French Republican values, the capitalist economic system, work and technical progress, laicità and religious diversity, and the care of creation. Among the authors are François Beck and Jean-Marc Berthoud, Rachel Calvert, Frédéric de Coninck, Robert Desprè, Luc Forestier, Daniel Hillion, Yannick Imbert, Marjorie Legendre, Luc Maroni, Alexandre Nussbaumer, Luc Olekhnovitch, Éric Pires Antunes, and Louis Schweitzer.
Marjorie Legendre, an evangelical pastor and ethics professor, chairs the Evangelical Protestant Ethics Commission (CEPE) and is one of the authors of the book. She is also a pastor of the Union des Eglises Evangéliques Libres, Professor of Ethics and Spirituality at the Faculté Libre de Théologie Evangélique, President of the CEPE, member of the Groupe national de conversation évangéliques-catholiques, and a doctoral student in social ethics at the Institut Catholique de Paris.
In her chapter of the book, Legendre looks for connections between Liberté, égalité, fraternité (the most known definition of French republican values) and the Christian faith, suggesting that there are points of convergence between these concepts and the Judeo-Christian heritage.
The CEPE, initially the fruit of the initiative and collaboration of the Union des Eglises Evangéliques Libres (UEEL) and the Fédération des Eglises Evangéliques Baptistes de France (FEEBF), was created in 1996 and represents the wider evangelical world, including UNEPREF, CAEF, Mennonites. It is a partner of the Conseil National des Evangéliques de France (CNEF).
Legendre laments that in the past, Protestant and Catholic social works have become secularized over time, losing their specifically Christian flavor. She believes that the commitment of evangelical Christians with a clear evangelical ethic could help make society a little better, either for the optimists or a little less worse, for the pessimists.
France is currently going through a socio-political moment that can be chaotic, and according to Legendre, a challenge for evangelical Christians is to anchor their action in in-depth biblical reflection and to assume and remain faithful to their religious roots in the context of a 'fighting' laicità that would like to exclude religion from the public arena.
The free evangelical pastor believes that if evangelical Protestants in France fully understood their role in society, they would become more consistent with the Gospel message, focusing on the person's needs beyond just salvation. She emphasizes that evangelical social ethics should be rooted in the Word of God, which is considered to be fully inspired by God and sufficient to provide answers to specific questions of social ethics.
The book Per un'etica sociale evangelica is intended to be accessible for both the general public and Christians interested in questions of social ethics. It is a valuable resource for those seeking to understand and apply a biblical perspective to contemporary social issues.
