Toyota Executive Visits Fukushima Prefecture to Advance Hydrogen Society
Akio Toyoda, the President of Toyota Motor Corporation, visited Fukushima Prefecture on March 5, 2021. The purpose of his visit was to inspect the Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field (FH2R), a proving test facility with the world's largest hydrogen production capacity.
During his visit, Toyoda compared the goal of a hydrogen-based society to the creation of a basic unit in Toyota's Woven City, stating that it cannot be achieved by taking only one small step. He emphasized the need for collective action to achieve carbon neutrality, a goal that Toyota aims to achieve by 2050.
Toyota has been contributing to Fukushima by supporting the development and deployment of hydrogen technology. This involvement has led to the installation of a large-scale 10 MW green hydrogen production facility in 2020, advancing clean energy and decarbonization efforts in the region.
In addition to the production of hydrogen, Toyota plans to conduct various tests in Fukushima. These tests include implementing hydrogen-based delivery trucks and prefectural government vehicles. The company also aims to create a place for hydrogen energy demonstration experiments, such as by installing a power supply vehicle as standard equipment to ensure uninterrupted power supply in emergencies.
Power generators will be set up at roadside stations, supermarkets, and convenience stores in the town to cover some of the electricity used there. Solar panels are used in large areas of Namie to generate hydrogen for storage and transportation.
Robotics testing, including flying cars and drones, is already being conducted in Fukushima. Toyota's goal is to improve people's lives in the future by determining an approach as a mobility company.
The town of Namie in Fukushima Prefecture was severely damaged by a nuclear accident 10 years ago. Most people in Namie were forced to evacuate due to the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident. Evacuation orders were lifted in parts of the town four years ago.
Akio Toyoda expressed optimism that the demonstration in Namie will spread to other cities, involving all the people, companies, and local governments that are taking part in this project. He stated that a hydrogen-based society requires the process of making, transporting, and using hydrogen.
Toyota's involvement in Fukushima is motivated by the opportunity to demonstrate success and entice other prefectures and cities to join the movement towards a hydrogen-based society. Akio Toyoda announced his commitment to help create a new future for the town. He expressed that the Great East Japan Earthquake is still ongoing, but the 10-year mark can be seen as an opportunity to consciously move to the next phase.
Cities with a population of 300,000 are the most common type of municipality in Japan, and defining a basic unit for a city of this size is important for realizing a hydrogen-based society. Akio Toyoda's visit to Fukushima is a significant step towards achieving this goal.
