Despite lacking a hotel, Golden Nugget Danville has had a robust start. At the anniversary event, President Jimmy Wilmot pointed out that the casino has contributed $2.8 million in gaming taxes, $350,000 in property taxes, $402,000 in sales taxes, and $45,000 in food and beverage taxes to Danville since its opening. The state of Illinois has also received $5.6 million in taxes from the casino and $420,000 from Danville businesses in purchases.
These figures represent significant financial gains for Danville, which was counting on the casino to help address a fiscal predicament due to public pension liabilities. Wilmot mentioned that around half of the visitors to Golden Nugget Danville have been from outside Illinois.
This is significant, as the property may face competition from Churchill Downs' Terre Haute Casino Resort in Indiana, which is an hour's drive southeast of the Golden Nugget. Erpenbach acknowledged some impact on the Golden Nugget when Churchill opened its Indiana casino hotel in April, but she assured that it won't derail their plans in Danville.
Sportsbook Won't Happen Soon Due to Finances
Erpenbach stated that the goal is for Golden Nugget Danville to eventually have a retail sportsbook, but this is unlikely in the near to medium term. The reason for this is that DraftKings, which already has an in-person presence in Illinois, would need to pay another $10 million for a license to operate a sportsbook at Golden Nugget Danville.
With increased taxes in the state, this licensing fee is not financially viable, especially since in Illinois, as well as the rest of the US, the bulk of sports wagers are placed online instead of in-person.
DraftKings and Golden Nugget are connected by DraftKings' 2022 acquisition of Golden Nugget Online Gaming (GNOG), which made Fertitta one of the largest shareholders in the online sportsbook operator.
In the midst of the casino's anniversary celebration, Erpenbach discussed the possibility of a hotel, stating, "We're excited about the potential for a hotel, but we need to assess demand before making any extensive property expansions." Later in the event, the topic of a retail sportsbook came up, where Erpenbach admitted, "While we aim to incorporate a retail sportsbook at Golden Nugget Danville, the high licensing fee and predominantly online betting trends make it an unfeasible venture in the near future."
