In the heart of a charming British garden, the bloom of the season has been nothing short of spectacular. This year, the garden has transformed from a mostly green expanse to a vibrant canvas of colours, thanks to the efforts of its diligent gardener.

The 'Lamprocapnos spectabilis' 'Alba', known for its delicate pink blooms, was all but over by the beginning of May, marking the start of the floral extravaganza. The tulips, too, finished a good few weeks earlier than usual, leaving the empty pots to await the arrival of the foxgloves.

However, not all blooms followed the usual schedule. The Cornus 'Gloria Birkett', a much-loved shrub, came into blossom a good six weeks late, adding a burst of colour to the later stages of the summer.

The zinc tub of lavender is currently showing a mass of luminous purple spikes, filling the air with its sweet scent. The garden now boasts splashes of colour, including claret pelargoniums, tangerine geums, pale-pink linaria, and a smudge of purple from new pelargoniums.

Some mistakes were made in the garden, such as the introduction of a variety of Styrax japonicus with white bells, which, while beautiful, proved to be as exciting as a privet hedge. Nevertheless, the garden's overall success far outweighed any minor setbacks.

The rose named Rosa Munstead Wood (Ausbernard) bloomed this summer, much to the joy of its gardener. The deep burgundy velvet blooms of Rosa Munstead Wood brought great joy, with their rich hues adding a touch of elegance to the garden.

The viburnum, previously shrouded in shade, bloomed after its canopy was opened up, adding another layer of beauty to the garden. Iris 'Benton Susan' also bloomed in the garden for the first time, its soft caramel, white, and egg-yolk-yellow flowers creating a striking contrast against the greenery.

Three Hydradelphia macrophylla 'Maculata' are currently festooned with pink and violet buds, promising a stunning display in the coming weeks. The garden, more floriferous than it has ever been, now houses roses, verbascum, geums, and linaria, creating a riot of colours that captivate the eye.

The gardener, who cultivates the bloom of the rose bush Rosa Munstead Wood, is David Austin. In 2025, other flowers growing in his garden include English roses, clematis, lavender, and delphiniums. The apricot-flowered rose with buds too yellow to complement its deep-pink neighbor has, however, annoyed the author's aesthetic sensibilities.

The medlar tree's removal of several branches allowed enough sunlight for the bed beneath it, causing the hydrangea and 'Limelight' to flower with new energy. The garden is now galloping towards the point where flowers are as proliferous as leaves.

This year has been a good year for flowers in the garden, and the author looks forward to the continued bloom and beauty that the coming seasons will bring.
