Navigare sulle strade coreane si trasforma in un'esperienza di gioco coinvolgente e competitiva con questa innovativa app di navigazione.
In frenetic streets of South Korea, an app for navigation called Tmap has raised the driving experience to a new level. Introduced in 2016, the app has introduced a unique program called Driving Score, which rewards safe driving habits and promotes a culture of caution on the roads.
The Driving Score program monitors acceleration, braking, cornering, and speed using users' phones. This innovative approach has led to a decrease in traffic accidents in South Korea. In 2023, the number of traffic accidents dropped to 198,296, a significant decrease from 223,552 in 2014.
The love for safety is spreading beyond government programs in South Korea. Seo Beom-kyu, head of the traffic safety division at the Korea Road Traffic Authority, believes that the private-sector model adds something new to road safety. Chun Ji-yeon, senior researcher at the Korea Insurance Research Institute's mobility center, suggests that the Driving Score program might be influencing safer driving habits.
The private-sector model of rewarding good behaviour is seen as a new addition to the main drivers of change in road safety. Similar methods to Tmap's Driving Score program have been adopted by other apps and rental car company Socar.
The Driving Score program creates a rare alignment of interests, where safer driving lowers accident risk, insurers save on claims, and drivers save money. Over 19 million drivers have participated in the program so far, with over 10 million users qualifying for auto insurance discounts or credits.
One such user, Lee Ji-yeon, expressed her joy by saying, "When I got a perfect 100 last month, I posted it online like a medal."
The decrease in traffic accidents is also reflected in the falling fatalities per 10,000 people involved in traffic accidents. In 2014, the figure stood at 9.4, which dropped to 5.0 in 2023.
Tmap claims to have prevented 31,366 traffic accidents over a three-year span. This significant achievement underscores the impact of the Driving Score program in promoting safer driving habits.
As the Driving Score program continues to influence driving behaviour in South Korea, it serves as a beacon of hope for safer roads worldwide. The success of Tmap's innovative approach highlights the potential of private-sector models in shaping the future of road safety.
