Despite the fact that sports betting is legal in nearly 40 states, Bowyer chose to run his business in California, where sports betting is illegal, and then engaged in conduct designed to conceal what he was doing. He kept "numerous bank accounts" to receive illicit proceeds and significantly underreported his income in 2022, saying it was $607,000 when it was $4.03 million.
Bowyer's client, Ippei Mizuhara, placed at least 19,000 bets with him, and Bowyer acknowledged Mizuhara had a "massive gambling addiction problem." Mizuhara was ordered to pay nearly $17 million in restitution to Ohtani. Bowyer, on the other hand, paid restitution of $1.6 million.
Bowyer's attorney, Diane C. Bass, argued for a sentence of home confinement and community service, but U.S. District Judge John W. Holcomb sentenced Bowyer after he pleaded guilty to charges for operating an unlawful gambling business, money laundering, and subscribing to a false tax return.
Bowyer, who is the father of five children, the youngest of whom is 4 years old, has already done 100 hours of community service. He has also attended therapy and advised others with gambling issues to not follow his path.
Before his conviction, Mizuhara was known primarily for his role supporting Ohtani in MLB. The details of his gambling activities with Bowyer have cast a shadow over his reputation. It remains to be seen how this development will affect his future in the sports world.
