La cybersecurity remains a pressing concern, with financial documents being the most frequently breached content type, accounting for 41% of all exposed files. This underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures, particularly in the financial sector.
In an effort to address these concerns, the prevalence of technology committees has grown from 8% in 2019 to 13% in 2025, with Audit committees being the primary choice for AI oversight. However, challenges persist, with lack of clear ownership, insufficient internal expertise, and resource constraints being the main barriers to the operational implementation of AI governance programs.
On the sustainability front, nearly half of Fortune 100 companies cited AI in their director qualifications this year, almost double the number from 2024. Most compliance and risk practitioners report time savings and productivity increases from using AI. A clear majority (87%) of US companies have maintained or increased their investment in business sustainability efforts this year, despite regulatory uncertainty.
Interestingly, 65% of respondents see supply chain sustainability as providing a competitive advantage through risk reduction, enhanced resilience, brand improvements, and cost savings. However, only about one-third of organizations have high-quality data systems, AI governance and security policies, and role-specific training in place for AI use.
In terms of regulatory compliance, only 13% of companies are on track to comply with deadlines across four major regulations: the EU's CSRD and CBAM, California's SB-253, and Canada's Modern Slavery Act. This highlights the need for improved preparedness and compliance strategies.
The prevalence of cybersecurity risks is evident, with nearly half (45%) of UK adults having accessed work emails while on holiday, commuting, or in public places, potentially exposing themselves to risks. Similarly, human resources data appeared in 82% of incidents, often containing payroll information, resumes, and employee personal identifiable information.
In response to these challenges, the number of S&P 500 companies with AI oversight committees more than tripled in 2025. However, only 25% of organizations have fully implemented AI governance programs. This suggests a need for continued focus and investment in AI governance.
Lastly, 31% of executives are increasing sustainability investments while reducing public communications about them, while a third of executives admit to knowingly reporting ESG data based on estimates they knew were inaccurate to meet compliance, marketing, or investor expectations. This raises concerns about transparency and honesty in corporate sustainability reporting.
In conclusion, while significant strides have been made in AI governance, sustainability, and cybersecurity, there is still much work to be done. Clear ownership, robust cybersecurity measures, and honest reporting are crucial for continued progress in these areas.
