despite the lack of top endorsements, Mamdani has managed to energize many within the party who are not usually mobilized, a fact noted by State Sen. Gustavo Rivera. Rivera, a left-leaning Bronx Democrat, criticized the lack of support for Mamdani, especially given the threats posed by Donald Trump against the city and the potential impact of policy changes on the social safety net.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has also weighed in, suggesting that Democratic Party elders were setting a bad example by not endorsing the party's nominee. Meanwhile, many top Democrats in New York are still declining to endorse Mamdani, bucking the tradition of backing a party primary winner. Among those holding out are House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Notable absences from Mamdani's list of endorsements also include Reps. Yvette Clarke, Dan Goldman, Ritchie Torres, Gregory Meeks, and Grace Meng. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has had multiple conversations with Mamdani, but she has not endorsed him either.
However, there are signs that key high-ranking Democrats may announce their support for Mamdani in the coming days. As of now, the political establishment, including Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams, have shown opposition or ambiguous stances rather than endorsement toward Mamdani.
The church meeting at Cornerstone Baptist Church was an introduction of Mamdani to some congregation leaders, and some members of the community view this as an opportunity for Mamdani to reach out to Black voters, particularly older New Yorkers.
Meanwhile, Trump has declared that two candidates should drop out of the race to help Cuomo, who is running as an independent after being upset by Mamdani in the June primary. Advisers for Jeffries have previously dismissed the idea that they are threatened by talk of a primary challenge.
One notable endorsement for Mamdani comes from State Sen. Liz Krueger, who expressed her support for Mamdani's commitment to serving regular New Yorkers. The party's most liberal flank is eager to point out the group has made inroads in Jeffries' district.
In a recent development, Hochul dismissed the negotiations between Mayor Eric Adams and Trump's aides with a profanity, indicating her opposition to any potential role for Trump in New York's administration. The race is heating up, and the battle for endorsements promises to be a crucial factor in the upcoming election.
