VDL Groep reports strong first-half performance despite challenges ahead
In a positive start to the year, the Dutch industrial manufacturing company VDL Groep reported a turnover of 2 billion EUR for the first half of 2025. The company's net profit stood at 53 million EUR, marking a significant improvement from the 3 million EUR recorded a year earlier.
The Finished Products division saw a modest increase in turnover, rising from 432 million EUR to 444 million EUR. However, the Car Assembly division experienced a decrease in turnover compared to the same period last year. Excluding the Car Assembly division, VDL Groep's turnover rose by 2.5 percent.
The integration of VDL Van Hool is progressing, though the division continues to operate at a loss. On the other hand, the acquisition of VDL Agrobotics, previously Crux Agribotics, in June has expanded VDL's presence in food technology.
VDL's President & CEO, Willem van der Leegte, oversaw the company's development in the last six months. The company expects turnover and earnings to remain stable in the second half of the year, but highlights continuing uncertainty linked to global political and economic pressures.
Bus sales increased to 270 million EUR, up from 132 million EUR last year. However, import duties in the United States and the weaker dollar are adding pressure to the Bus division. In a bid to strengthen the competitive position of the Netherlands and Europe, VDL has urged policymakers to pursue a consistent long-term industrial strategy following the general election.
The order book for VDL Groep stood at 1.73 billion EUR in week 35. Employment levels at VDL Groep remain above 14,000 staff across the group. However, the order book decline is primarily due to postponed bus deliveries.
The turnover for VDL Groep's Subcontracting division decreased to 1.30 billion EUR, reflecting weaker conditions in the semiconductor sector. About 250 staff are employed across VDL Nedcar, VDL Special Vehicles, VDL Mobility Innovation Centre, and VDL Defentec at the Born site.
A notable development at the Born site is the Ministry of Defence signing an agreement to lease production space for defence projects. The production of the new third-generation VDL Futura will begin next year, with its launch scheduled at Busworld in Brussels in October.
In conclusion, while VDL Groep has reported a strong first half of the year, it faces challenges ahead, particularly in the Bus division and the Subcontracting division, due to external factors such as import duties and weaker conditions in the semiconductor sector. The company remains optimistic about the future, with the launch of the new VDL Futura and the ongoing integration of VDL Van Hool.
