Despite concerns over a shrinking wallet thanks to inflation and a shaky Wall Street, flights to the Las Vegas airport are soaring to new heights. Harry Reid International Airport experienced its busiest three-month period ever from June to August 2022. In September alone, more than 4.75 million passengers either departed or arrived at Harry Reid International, representing an impressive 26% increase compared to the same month in 2021 and a mere 10% dip compared to September 2019.
Southwest is Las Vegas' largest commercial airline and accounted for around 1.6 million passengers in September 2022, with Spirit trailing behind at 707,041 passengers. While LAS is an international airport, the vast majority of passengers are traveling to and from domestic locations, with around 4.4 million passengers taking to the skies last month.
Conventions Mean Business
Convention attendance in September hit a record high of 372,600 people, marking a 21% improvement year-over-year. However, MICE (meetings, incentive travel, conventions, and exhibitions) visitor volume still has a ways to go before returning to pre-pandemic levels, with September 2019 bringing approximately 460K business travelers to Southern Nevada with the primary purpose of attending a meeting or exhibition.
Nevertheless, Messina believes that MICE organizers and business leaders continue to plan large-scale events in Las Vegas, pointing out that "people are looking at the greater macroeconomics that impact travel and conventions, and people are optimistic." She notes that "the networking, the learning, the education - that is what meetings and events are."
In October, the Global Gaming Expo (G2E) hosted its first full-scale in-person convention since the pandemic at The Venetian Expo, drawing in more than 25,000 attendees. Las Vegas also hosted numerous other significant conventions last month, including IMEX America, EXPCON 2022, and the Evolve Business Technology Conference.
