Cupra's Tindaya Concept Car: A Glimpance into the Future of Electric Performance

Cupra, the Spanish performance brand, has unveiled the Tindaya concept car, a radical showcase of futuristic technology and design cues that will shape the company's next-generation line-up.

The Tindaya concept car, the largest ever built by Cupra, boasts a 0-62mph time of 4.1 seconds, making it the quickest car produced by the brand. This impressive speed is made possible by a unique range-extender (REx) drivetrain, a technology that several manufacturers, including Mazda, Hyundai, Leapmotor, Ford, and now Cupra, are experimenting with in Europe.

At the heart of the Tindaya REx is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, likely sourced from Volkswagen's Mexico factory, which could extend the car's range to an astonishing 620 miles by topping up the battery on the move. The battery itself provides a range of 186 miles, while the electric motors produce a combined power of 489bhp.

The Tindaya concept car offers the choice of either pure-electric power or the new REx system. This hybrid setup could potentially be deployed in other next-generation Volkswagen Group cars, offering a potential solution for wavering uptake of pure-EVs in Europe.

Ruben Rodriguez Bosch, head of UX/UI design at Cupra, is responsible for the styling of Cupra's next-generation line-up. The Tindaya concept car emphasises driver engagement, hinting at a focus on emotional appeal in the brand's future models.

Interestingly, the Tindaya concept car is hypothetically based on the SSP platform that will underpin other Volkswagen Group EVs. This is the first indication that the SSP architecture can accommodate a combustion powertrain of any sort.

While Cupra has not shared any plans to deploy such a setup in a production car, the Tindaya concept car, in toned-down form, may potentially serve as a successor to the Formentor.

There is a surge in demand for REx powertrains in China, and the Tindaya REx's innovative technology could pave the way for a new era of performance hybrid vehicles. The Tindaya concept car is more than just a fast car; it's a glimpse into the future of Cupra and the automotive industry as a whole.
