American health officials have issued recalls for shrimp imported from foreign countries due to concerns about radioactive material. The most likely explanation for the contamination is accidental contamination from industrial equipment, according to reports.
Senator John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana, gave a warning about the shrimp recalls on the Senate floor, using a giant poster board featuring a screenshot from the film Alien to illustrate his concern. Kennedy claimed that the shrimp contained the radioactive isotope cesium-137, which is not naturally occurring in food.
The level of radiation found in the shrimp is similar to the radiation levels found in bananas. However, the potential long-term effects of repeated low-dose exposure are a concern, with some experts suggesting it could contribute to cancer.
Kennedy listed some brands of shrimp that have been recalled, including those from Walmart. The FDA recall notices mention that there's no evidence the radiation will kill you, but Kennedy warned that eating the radioactive shrimp could turn people into the chestburster from Alien.
Recently, shrimp imports to the USA were recalled due to undeclared allergens such as egg and wheat found in shrimp products. Affected products included Ny.Siok Shrimp Crackers and Frozen Cumin Flavour Shrimp distributed in Canadian provinces like British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario.
Kennedy believes that NOAA needs to improve inspections of shrimp imported from countries with lower safety standards. He prefers homegrown Louisiana shrimp over foreign shrimp due to concerns about radioactivity.
Kennedy's entire speech is available on the Forbes YouTube channel, and a video clip of his warning can be found on his X account. However, it's worth noting that the video clip omits almost two minutes of his remarks.
Kennedy claimed that shrimp producers overseas intentionally make shrimp radioactive, but there's no evidence to support this. He also stated that the average person might be surprised at how radioactive material is used in consumer products like smoke detectors.
In a statement that he didn't tweet, Kennedy expressed his bias towards Louisiana shrimp, stating, "If you're going to eat shrimp, you might as well eat the best. And in my book, that's Louisiana shrimp."
