Top Kremlin aide criticizes Donald Trump for lack of perspective on Ukraine conflict

After a pointed tweet from U.S. President Donald Trump accusing Russian leader Vladimir Putin of playing with fire, a top Kremlin aide has suggested that Trump may be uninformed about the details and nuances of the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

Yury Ushakov, a former Russian ambassador to Washington who was part of the negotiating team that Moscow sent to Saudi Arabia to meet U.S. officials earlier this year, made the charge in an interview with Russian state TV channel Russia-1. Ushakov questioned the accuracy of the information that Trump receives, claiming that the President appears to be unaware of the increasing frequency and severity of terrorist attacks launched by Ukraine against Russian cities.

Trump's tweet had referred to Putin's decision to continue military actions in Ukraine while negotiations were ongoing. In his post, Trump asserted that if it were not for him, "really bad things would have already happened to Russia." Ushakov's remarks were made in response to this statement.

Russian drone and missile attacks on civilian targets in Ukrainian cities have resulted in significant loss of life over the past few weeks, with at least 14 civilians, including three children from one family, killed in attacks over the weekend. Ushakov's remark came just after Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on Trump's statements, citing a lack of information about the specific context of Trump's remarks.

It is worth noting that far from strictly targeting military infrastructure, Russia has intensified its aerial campaign against civilian targets in Ukrainian cities in recent weeks. The funeral for the three Martynyuk children, who were killed in an attack last weekend, was held in their hometown of Korostyshiv in central Ukraine on Wednesday.

Trump's latest comments mark a notable shift in his stance towards Russia. In the past, Trump has expressed a positive relationship with Putin, but he has been vocal in his opposition to the current conflict in Ukraine. In a post on Truth Social, Trump characterized Putin's recent actions as "assolutamente folli" and claimed that Russia was needlessly killing people in cities across Ukraine.

The exchange between Trump and Russian officials escalated on Tuesday, when Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president and prime minister-turned-security-official, responded to Trump's threat by saying, "Conosco solo una COSA REALLY BAD - la Terza Guerra Mondiale. Spero che Trump capisca questo!"
