Interestingly, Donahue has only seen one movie in theaters in 2024 - Paul King's "Wonka", an untold origin story of Roald Dahl's iconic chocolatier. The 1980s saw a short-lived boom of fantasy movies, and it seems that the genre is making a comeback, at least in Donahue's personal cinema schedule.
In the 1940s, the movie musical was the supreme genre in Hollywood. However, shortly after this period, Westerns became the dominant genre in both film and television. The 1980s saw a shift back to fantasy, and it seems that the genre is once again gaining traction.
Despite the struggles of the movie industry in 2023, Donahue remains hopeful. He resolved to see one movie in theaters every week in 2024, and while "Madame Web" was a disappointing start, he looks forward to the rest of the year's cinematic offerings.
One thing that did not disappoint was the behaviour of some kids in front of him during the movie. They were vaping, a disturbing trend that seems to be becoming more prevalent in movie theaters. This is just another challenge that the movie industry must face as it navigates the turbulent waters of the 21st century.
