Performance Food Group (PFG) Presents Sustainable Distribution Center in Gilroy
Performance Food Group Company (PFG) has taken a significant step towards a greener future with the unveiling of a sustainable distribution center in Gilroy, California. The facility, which employs over 200 people and serves the California market from Sacramento to Big Sur and San Francisco to Fresno, has been transformed into a model of the future by partnering with several industry-leading technology companies.
At the heart of this transformation are direct-emissions-free transportation and refrigeration technologies, solar power generation capabilities, and onsite charging infrastructure. PFG utilized the California Energy Commission's (CEC) EnergIIZE Commercial Vehicles program to develop this infrastructure, and FreeWire's energy requirements are nearly 10 times lower than traditional chargers, reducing peak energy demand and grid strain.
The distribution center's focus on sustainability extends to its fleet, with PFG deploying seven zero-emission Class 8 Volvo VNR Electric trucks and pairing them with electric transport refrigeration units (TRUs). These TRUs, provided by Advance Energy Machines (AEM), run on low voltage DC, making the workplace energy-efficient and safe. AEM's proprietary solar-electric power system powers these TRUs, further reducing the facility's carbon footprint.
To optimize the final project design scope and bring the most value to PFG, GridMarket analysts were brought on board. They used data and AI to automate the preliminary technology and financial feasibility assessments, setting the facility up to handle the anticipated demand changes associated with installing chargers on site for the new electric vehicle fleet additions.
The rooftop solar and battery storage project was initiated by GridMarket's platform, and Enerlogics Networks, Inc. and partner MBL Energy were selected to install the system. The installation includes 15 Boost Chargers from FreeWire Technologies, capable of simultaneously charging 30 Class 8 tractors. Each electric TRU installation in PFG's fleet has helped eliminate approximately 20 tons of CO per TRU, per year.
PFG's commitment to sustainability has yielded significant results. As of Q1 2024, PFG has reduced CO output by 500 tons over the past three years due to its sustainability efforts. The company plans to continue its partnership with industry-leading technology companies as it works to implement sustainability measures in its locations across North America.
TEC Equipment will provide service and support to the fleet's Volvo VNR Electric trucks, ensuring their smooth operation and continued contribution to PFG's sustainability goals. This partnership marks a significant step forward in PFG's mission to create a more sustainable food distribution network.
In a world where sustainability is increasingly important, PFG's Gilroy facility serves as a shining example of what can be achieved through partnership and innovation. The facility's transformation into a sustainable distribution center of the future is a testament to PFG's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to a greener future.
