Tuttavia, il futuro del Defender EV è meno chiaro. I problemi di imballaggio delle batterie hanno portato Land Rover a escludere una versione elettrica del Defender attuale. Invece, il Defender a batteria, noto come Defender Sport o Defender 80, sarà costruito sulla nuova piattaforma EMA (Architettura Modulare Elettrica).
Lennard Hoornik, chief commercial officer di Land Rover, ha rivelato queste informazioni in un'intervista con Autocar. Ha suggerito che il Defender EV potrebbe non essere un futuro Defender sulla piattaforma D7x attuale, ma un modello separato, possibly akin to the rumoured baby Defender.
Despite hints of a Defender EV for years, Land Rover has admitted that using the current Defender platform for an electric version would be impractical due to battery packaging issues, particularly due to the Defender's axle design and off-road capability requirements.
In the meantime, the current Defender offers a plug-in hybrid option in some markets. However, its battery capacity of 19.2 kwh delivers less than 30 miles of electric range, indicating room for improvement in Land Rover's electrification strategy.
As for the launch timeline of the Defender EV, no specific details have been disclosed yet. Land Rover is keeping the excitement building, promising that the Defender EV will be launched at some point.
