Jazz Days Dresden Celebrates 25th Anniversary with "Jazz Throughout the Year" Concept
The Jazz Days Dresden, an international jazz festival in Dresden, Germany, is marking its 25th anniversary with a new approach. In response to funding cuts, the festival will present a "Jazz throughout the year" concept, with individual events distributed throughout the year, particularly in the autumn.
The festival, which stands for the bridge between jazz, classical, world music, and urban genres, stylistic openness, artistic quality, and cultural diversity, has faced a 55% funding reduction from the city of Dresden, while general institutional music funding only decreases by an average of 3%. However, if additional funds are secured, the festival could still take place in its classic form for up to two months from October 2 to November 30, 2025.
The founders and hosts - the Klazz Brothers - significantly shaped the profile of the festival with their musical concept of "Jazz meets Classical meets World". This concept has run as a red thread through 25 years of festival history, culminating in the festival being Europe's largest crossover jazz festival before the pandemic.
The official jubilee will take place in Unkersdorf church from September 19 to 21, 2025. The heart of the jubilee remains set in Unkersdorf, where the festival's roots were laid. Otfried Kotte, from the cultural committee of the Kirchvorstand of the Ev.-Luth. Kirchgemeinde Linkselbische Täler, is pleased that the festival has remained loyal to Unkersdorf and brought high-quality music to the area.
Managing Director Tanja Grandmontagne emphasizes that the festival continues not through institutional support but through artistic strength, a loyal audience, and the belief that music has a social task. She concludes that the heart of the festival beats particularly loudly in Unkersdorf and that the festival needs open ears, bold decision-makers, and people who believe in the power of music.
The anniversary celebration includes a strong program, a new year-round format, and an emotional highlight in Unkersdorf. The city district councils in Pieschen, Loschwitz, and the old town provide support for the new year-round concert format.
The Jazz Days Dresden was initially started with a few concerts and much idealism. In 2000, Otfried Kotte played a significant role in the founding of the festival, bringing the Klazz Brothers to the 650th anniversary concert. Kotte remained involved in the event for its 25th anniversary.
Despite the funding cuts, the festival team is sending a clear signal with the new year-round concert format. The festival typically features around 100 concerts, over 40,000 visitors, and more than 500 international artists from over 35 nations. With the "Jazz throughout the year" concept, the festival aims to continue its mission of bringing diverse and high-quality music to Dresden and beyond.
