The lack of gender equality in savings banks may be due to their exclusion from the FuPoG I law, which aims to ensure equal participation of women and men in leadership positions in the private sector and public administration. As municipal legal entities under public law, savings banks are not covered by this law.
Experts and advocates specializing in gender equality and labor law, as well as equality officers in public institutions and organizations, have proposed amendments to include savings banks in the FuPoG I law. Members of the Bundestag's Committee on Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, and politicians involved in gender equality legislation are also advocating for this change.
The Barkow consultants propose that explicitly including savings banks in the FuPoG I law would help increase the proportion of women in leadership positions within these institutions. This could be a significant step towards achieving gender equality in the savings bank sector.
