PayPal: Acquisizioni Strategiche e Espansione

Despite the growth in cross-border payments, the use of cryptocurrencies in retail domestic and cross-border payments remains limited. However, PayPal has been proactive in embracing this technology. In October 2020, the company launched the ability to buy, sell, and hold cryptocurrencies in its wallets in the US. Plans for Venmo and international markets to follow in offering this service were announced for 2021.

PayPal is also planning to expand the availability of this service to additional countries beyond its current limited availability. While specific future countries have not been publicly detailed as of 2025, PayPal expects to add an additional 50 million active users this year, bringing the total number of active accounts to 427 million.

The introduction of new products such as cryptocurrencies and Buy Now Pay Later helped boost engagement and reduce churn for PayPal. This is evident in the company's impressive Q4 2020 results, which saw a net revenue of $21.5 billion, a 22% increase from the previous year. The Total Payment Value for Q4 2020 was $277 billion, an increase of 39% compared to the previous year.

PayPal's expansion strategies are not limited to cryptocurrencies. Xoom, a money transfer service offered by PayPal, expanded its geographic coverage and pay-out capabilities in 2020, particularly in Africa. This expansion is set to continue in 2021, further strengthening PayPal's position in the global remittance market.

In addition, PayPal's initiative to allow Chinese customers to shop from abroad is expected to boost cross-border flows for the company. This move will also allow Chinese customers to use the acquired GoPay platform to shop from abroad.

In conclusion, PayPal's strategic acquisitions, expansion into new markets, and embrace of emerging technologies such as cryptocurrencies are positioning the company for continued growth and success in the global payments market.
