In the heart of Malaysia, a young entrepreneur named Nurul Wahidah is infusing new life into the nation's cultural heritage with her innovative handbags. Crafted from the traditional handwoven fabric, songket, her brand 'Karya Songket' is making waves both locally and internationally.

Nurul's journey began when she was just four years old, crafting pencil cases from fabric scraps. After earning a degree in tourism management from Universiti Utara Malaysia, she found it challenging to find a job related to her qualification. This led her to turn to making and selling handbags online.

In 2018, a customer suggested making handbags using songket fabric, a rare find in the market. Inspired, Nurul began to experiment with the traditional fabric, blending modern techniques with designs that appeal to the younger generation. Today, 'Karya Songket' designs and sells clutches, handbags, and other items made from songket fabric.

For Nurul, carrying a songket handbag represents the identity of the nation with art, history, and values. She sees songket as more than just a heritage textile, but also a platform for expression, innovation, and national identity. Her crafts are made from commercial songket fabrics available at textile shops.

The uniqueness of 'Karya Songket' handbags is achieved by carefully considering customer feedback and preferences. On average, she produces around 50 handbags a month. These elegant accessories, priced between RM79 and RM199 each, are sold exclusively online.

'Karya Songket' handbags have been chosen as official souvenirs by several organizations, representing Malaysia's cultural heritage on the global stage. Official souvenirs of Nurul Wahidah's Songket handbags, representing Malaysia's cultural heritage globally, have been selected by the Malaysian Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation (Kraftangan Malaysia).

Customers for 'Karya Songket' include people from Singapore, Brunei, prominent figures, and members of royalty. The success of her brand has not gone unnoticed, with Nurul Wahidah hoping to one day open her own workshop and share her skills with the community, particularly women who wish to generate income through sewing.

Nurul Wahidah considers her songket crafts as a commitment to keeping the traditional textile art alive and recognized by future generations. By revitalizing this traditional fabric with modern designs, she is not only preserving a piece of Malaysia's rich cultural heritage but also making it accessible and appealing to a wider audience.
